I would much rather my property tax go up than allow alcohol sales in Arab.  I'm not dumb I know that the money for Arab to continue to propser has to come from somewhere so I think we should start a good faith effort to hike property taxes instead of voting yes for alcohol.

The answer is not a yes vote.  This stuff kills people hourly and I don't see Arab as the type of place that is going to "prosper" from the sale of beer.  All the lies about how much business it is going to bring are just lies.

All the people vote yes will more than likely just burn in hell.

Go to the Church of Christ off main this Sunday and ask how you can be saved and lead a good life.

why would you ever say such a thing.  That is just wrong!  Why does the decision of churches have to represent the rest of us that might like the idea of buying a beer or go out to a nice place to eat that serves beer.

No thank you No Vote - you don't make my choices.  I'll vote yes and hopefully people in Arab will understand that the 100,000 churches we have here don't rule the city and the minds of everyone.  Get out and think for yourself for once.

Now wait a minute no one who votes Yes is going to go to hell.  Everyone has a vote and and hopefully everyone will use it.  I will be voting no but I hold no ill harm toward my best friend who is voting yes.  It is her choice and I honestly don't think that it will throw Arab into a upturn or downturn.  If it does pass I will visit any establishment that opens up that has a family atomosphere just as I would if the vote hadn't passed.

Get over it people!!!

I'm feeling the love on this board :-)

Sooo has anyone else noticed that Clayton's place where Bob's BBQ used to be was selling used cars for like two months and now there are like only 3 cars left.

Either they are selling lots of used cars or that is going to be Arab's new package store pending approval of Arab voters.

What does everyone else think?>

The number of cars change quite often. I think they are just moving them back and forth between lots.  Smiley

And I don't think it will ever be a package store....I think it's too close to the Assembly of God Church. But maybe not, it would be a nice package store. Actually, it could be split into two stores - package store on one side and an ABC store on the other. Grin

The ordinance states that building to building, not property lines, MUST BE 400 feet apart. They cannot be within 400 feet of a daycare, school, or church. Grocery stores are exempt from this rule.

Well I got Google Earth to come up and did some measuring.  If they were to build a new building on the north part of the parking lot it would be over 400ft from the church and the daycare at the gym.

How can there already be laws on the books if the voters haven't approved it.

In reference to laws on the books.
The City Council approved alcohol ordinances two years ago before the first referendum came up. As a matter of fact, state wide everyone gave Arab a hard time for having the toughest restrictions in the state on the selling and use of alcohol.

Okay folks, Consider this...I will be voting "NO",
1. not because of it being a moral issue, I drink.
2. not because of the money issues, the extra $ would most likely be wasted or missused
3. not because of the my fear of drunk drivers.
I AM VOTING NO BECAUSE I LIKE THE SMALL TOWN OF ARAB.  I DON'T  WANT THE THINGS BIG CITIES OFFER.  I LIKE THE SMALL, FRIENDLY, FAMILY TYPE TOWN WE HAVE.
I have lived in Chicago, Philly, and other big towns. This is the first small town I have lived in and I love it the way it is!!!  I don't want it to change,I don't want it to get too big or too busy etc.  If that is the environment you or I want we should move to....Huntsville, B'ham etc..  I have lived here 13yrs. and plan to live here the next 40, unless it changes to a big town atmosphere then I'll look for another small town to call home.  I understand for the most part this would not be a platform to run for office around here.  But I have to tell you, it is one of the best selling points for the community.  People who move here are moving here because of it's small town atmosphere and low crime rate (comparatively.) I believe we can progress and be inventive with our industry and commercial properties and at the same time promote the quiet small time atmosphere without the alcohol sales.

Small town is one thing but dead town is another.  Over 50 stores are empty and growing.  There was a great article in the Tribune from the owner of one of the few major companies we have left and he said his guests hate coming to Arab (you know the people who bring business to Arab) because they have to stay in Guntersville or Huntsville.
