The current Animal Shelter on Heroe's Lane is being enlarged from 10 stalls to 30. Volunteers are now meeting regularly and spend time and resources to make this as close to a "No-Kill" shelter as can be. I strongly believe that the way we treat our companion animals is a reflection on the quality of our society. We need more volunteers, resources and donations to ensure that we can provide safe homes for those animals that have been discarded, abused or abandoned. Our next meeting is at Mink Creek Cafe on Tuesday May 13th 7pm. Please join us and help make a difference.

Arab Animal Shelter will be at Tractor Supply on Saturday, 31 May, from 10 am to 2 pm. There will be dogs to adopt, as well as fund-raising items for sale to support the Arab Animal Shelter. Come and meet these lonely, abandoned dogs and adopt a new friend.

There are now 22 dogs in the Arab Animal Shelter. The shelter is at full capacity until the city finishes the caging on the expansion areas. Two of the dogs are spoken for (1 mother dog and 1 puppy). There are 6 puppies still being weaned. 7 assorted puppies that were abandoned, 3 dogs that are either adult or close to it, and 4 dogs that fall in between puppy and adult. The puppies are 3-4 to a cage, 7 with momma, and most of the others are 2 to a cage. It is very crowded and there is no more room. Please spay or neuter your animals. Please visit the Animal Shelter and adopt a dog or puppy. Everyone of these animals are friendly, loving dogs and would make a wonderful addition to any family.

Arab Animal Shelter is now offering a free webpage posting for local animals that need homes. Our website is located at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/AL87.htmlInformation on posting an animal can be found by clicking on "Other Local Pets Needing Homes". We hope that by offering this service, we can find homes for these animals before they end up at our shelter. We currently have 22 dogs at our shelter. We will be having a pet adoption on Saturday, 31 May, at Tractor Supply in Arab. Come visit us at Hero Lane behind the National Guard off Cullman Road in Arab.

We signed up for days in June to work at the shelter.
Work involves cleaning kennels (hose and squeegee dry, also cleaning food and water pans) - best to put dogs in the yard to play while this is being done), then food and water. We need many more volunteers because it ends up being the same people nearly every day and we don't want anyone getting burned out on this.
We are also going to try to keep to a single type of dog food as the constant changing of brands and types means the dogs have difficulty adjusting and it makes cleaning the kennels that much harder. Since many of the dogs are still puppies and the adults coming in are under fed and under nourished, we decided on Pedigree Puppy food to be the only brand served there. Contributions for dog food are gratefully accepted.
Please do not give the dogs toys as they end up torn apart and clog the sewer. We are having sewer problems and will try to present a proposal to the City Council at the meeting on 16 June.
We are trying to worm dogs and address the flea and tick problem as soon as dogs arrive and need donations to help with that, and we need a small refrigerator to store medications (fridge was donated yesterday).
We managed to place 9 dogs in homes - 4 last week and 5 at our adoption event on 31 May. We have had 5 new dogs come into the shelter - 3 Friday and 2 Monday.
Our need for a new hot water heater is dire - the old one is rusting and if it bursts there will be and electrocution possibility. We are also looking for a washer/dryer donation. Possibilities for all three are being pursued.
We are in the process of going through the legalities to set this up as an official non-profit organization.

Awesome news all around. I should be at home most of next month so I can start taking a few days on through the summer.
Just curious if they are going to knock down that wall in the supply room where the tub and water tank is to make access to the other new area of the shelter.
Also, I am in the process of creating a volunteer site to place all the notes from the meetings and host a calendar and e-mail list as well. Should be online today or tomorrow.

It would help to know what is going on.. a calendar online is a big plus.
I do have a question.. That water heater is scary, is it possible to buy one with the donations that have been collected? Maybe Marvin's would give us a discount and we could place a 'thanks to Marvin's' to give them credit sort of like an ad.
I can't afford to buy a new water heater but I could donate a bag of food now and then.
I would like to help but I personally am not able to clean out all the pens by myself. If there is someone who I could team up with and help, that would be great.
Since I missed the meeting I wondered what was discussed about guidelines for adopting from the shelter, taking in animals dropped off, etc.
I was there when a puppy was brought in by someone who said it was a stray. There seemed to be some confusion as to whether or not he should have been taken in without the person making a donation. I just want us all to be on the same page.. There is nothing in the city code about charging for dogs/cats brought in or surrendered. So what should be done next time?

We have 22 dogs at the shelter. One of Little Momma's puppies died yesterday, reason unknown. A new puppy (Sweetie) was found on Fry Gap Road. 5 of the dogs have adoption pledges. 17 dogs are available for adoption. We will have another Adoption Event at Between the Bookends on Saturday, 14 June from 10 am - 2pm. To see the dogs before then, call 256-506-5777 or go to our website http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/AL87.html. Volunteers are needed to help bathe dogs on Friday and puppies on Saturday morning.

http:// Lil Momma and one of her pups left yesterday, and 2 of her puppies were adopted this evening. We will have an Adoption event this Saturday 10am - 2pm at "Between the Bookends" on the Parkway., I would like to pay particular thanks to Cliff and Linda, Bill and Fred. They have gone above and beyond in committing time, efforts and money at the Shelter. THANK YOU We need more volunteers, and more help . These animals need their kennels cleaned at a minimum of twice daily, once early morning and once late afternoon. ANY Help would be greatly appreciated. I am out there every day and spend approx 5 - 8hrs a day. I am committed to helping our companion animals. Please help With as much time as you can. We have an air-conditioner in the new area, where the Vet crates are, it is helping greatly to reduce the heat stress for our animals. A new water heater has been donated to replace the "time bomb" in the back. We had a slight accident at the shelter, I am sure you all heard about it, We should get the blocks and door replaced/repaired shortly We should also be submitting the paperwork to establish our Nonprofit (CARAA Companion Animal Rescue Arab Alabama) set up and tax info submitted. Fred will then be able to seek grant money to help us run a truly wonderful shelter.

SHELTER CLEANING: We’ve increased our shelter size; now we need to increase our volunteer base. Be a part of a wonderful organization, work in a new updated facility, make some lasting friendships (human and companion animal), and feel good about it. Daytime and evening volunteers needed. Contact Gregor Jackson at 256-506-5777 for more details.

We are also looking for volunteers to help with the dogs at the adoption event on Saturday. The more volunteers we have, the more dogs we can bring to the event.
