I seriously wish there were another person running for Place 2.. we've been having some bad issues with our garbage pickup and we called today and he's in charge of it? IMO he needs to do a *dang* better job.

What kind of garbage pickup issues have you relayed to the city that have not been addressed?  Ronny Shumate, place 2 city council member, takes his responsibilities very serious.  He has met with Allied Waste personally.  He is constantly making calls to them on behalf of residents who need dumpsters and aren't getting any action from them.  If it wasn't for Ronny Shumate our garbage collection would be a total mess.  Ronny Shumate is the most approachable of our council members.  If you have a garbage issue, be specific and let's get Ronny to solve it.

Ha-when I posted this. (yesterday) my husband had called for the third time and gotten the run around about our garbage. we have it out on time most times.. when it is full.. if we don't have it out it is our fault. For about 3 weeks in a row we haven't had our garbaged picked up. We had also gotten a note taped to our mailbox saying that our garbage would be picked up on Mondays starting February 11th. We didn't put it out that Thursday because it would be fine until Monday, and to be honest we weren't sure if it was going to be picked up or not. It not being picked up on Thursday was fine.. but it wasn't picked up Monday either.. it was picked up this morning.. Friday morning. We've had a buttload of garbage outside.. and yeah dogs come and go through it, which sucks. we also had a lot of dirty diapers outside b/c we have a 20 month old with a stomach virus. it was seriously getting ridiculous. anyway, last night right before 9 Ronny Shumate called us, apologized and said it would be picked up today. We had called previously with no call back. Soo, I'm sorry Ronny did get it taken care of. We need to find a better garbage pickup service though definitely.

Is there another garbage service?  Allied Waste bought BFI which was Waste Management.  Some cities provide their own garbage pickup services which would be ultra convenient for Arab since we have our own dump - but I'm sure the city's finances preclude the initial investment for vehicles and hiring staff.  And Allied Waste are the recycling kings.  So from cost standpoint, I think we're stuck.

Keep up the good work, Councilman Shumate.

When I was a kid I seem to remember Arab having it's own trucks and everything.  Why did we switch over if we have our own dump?

Our own dump is now an inert landfill.  Household garbage cannot be dumped there anymore.

When is the deadline for declaring your intentions for running for office?

Are there any additions to the slate listed on 14 February?
