Not enough required land in the city limits is one reason.  Federal regulations prevent an airport within a certain distance of another airport, ie Guntersville, Vinemont.  And I certainly don't want to be buzzed regularly by aircraft during take-offs and landings.  Be careful what you wish for....

common sense you hit on my number one reason against it. I lived right across from an airport once and it was HORRIBLE.
